SoundGate hears your guitar and coaches you as you play
SoundGate
You always wanted to play guitar, but teaching yourself is a fog. You never know if you're getting it right. SoundGate is a free app that hears you play.

The note you play lights up on the neck as you play it.
Play an acoustic near your phone's microphone, or plug an electric straight in. SoundGate listens. The note you play lights up on the fretboard, the neck of the guitar where your fingers press the strings. You see each note the instant you play it.
It figures out each note you play, then scores the whole session
It figures out each note you play, then scores the whole session.
Underneath, it's doing one neat thing. SoundGate listens to the sound and works out which note you hit, many times a second, then lights the matching spot on the fretboard. When you finish, SoundGate grades the run and gives you a score for the session. That score is what matters next.
The coach reads your session and picks your next drill
The coach reads your session and picks your next drill.
Here's the payoff. SoundGate also has a built-in coach, one you can ask anything, that answers from how you just played. Because SoundGate scored your actual session, the coach can say something about your playing, not guitar in general. In its own example, the coach spots that your fingers slowed on the fast parts, then hands you a short warm-up drill to fix it.
A full practice app, where the new idea is the coach and the free price
A full practice app, where the new idea is the coach and the free price.
It's a full practice app, not just a feature: guided lessons, a tuner, and a metronome, a steady click that keeps your timing, all free. Plenty of apps already hear you and score you, so that part is nothing new. What's new is the coach that reads your own scores, and that the whole thing is free, when others in this space charge a monthly subscription.

SoundGate hears your guitar and tells you what to practice next
SoundGate
So that's SoundGate: a free app that hears your guitar and tells you what to practice next. The real question is whether a coach that reads your own scores is what finally makes practice stick.
