Slide 1
This dense, high-poly scan just became clean, animation-ready geometry, automatically. AutoRemesher did that. And after sitting in beta since twenty twenty, it just shipped version one point zero.
Auto-retopology in a single pass
Here's the app doing it. You hand AutoRemesher a high-poly mesh, a sculpt, a scan, or a CAD export, and it rebuilds the entire surface as an even grid of four-sided quads. That's retopology, and normally you do it by hand. Here it's one automatic pass.
Retopology is the chore every 3D artist dreads
So why does this matter? A raw scan is millions of chaotic triangles. Before you can rig or animate it, you need topology that flows: sparse, even, four-sided quads that follow the surface. Doing that by hand is slow, skilled work. This does the whole pass for you.
It's parametric: set a target, hit Regenerate
The clever part is that it's parametric. You set a target quad count and a few shape controls, then hit Regenerate, and the whole surface retopologizes. In the developer's demo, a target of fifty thousand came back as about twenty-six thousand quads and twenty-eight thousand vertices. Roughly ninety-six percent of the faces are clean quads. And it's built on the Geogram and libigl libraries.
Same controls, no GUI: run it headless
./autoremesher \
--input armadillo.obj \
--output remeshed.obj \
--report remeshed_report.txt \
--target-quads 50000 \
--edge-scaling 1.0 \
--sharp-edge 90.0
And every one of those controls also works from the command line. Point the CLI at an OBJ file, pass the same knobs, and it runs with no window at all. Easy to drop into a batch job or an asset pipeline.
Version 1.0: free, on every desktop OS
| Platform | Download |
|---|---|
| Windows | autoremesher-1.0.0-win32-x86_64.zip |
| macOS | autoremesher-1.0.0.dmg |
| Linux | autoremesher-1.0.0.AppImage |
And here's the payoff of that long wait. After nearly six years since the twenty twenty beta, one point zero is a real release. Prebuilt downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux, MIT-licensed, or build it yourself from source. One click and it runs.
Know what it is before you download
One honest note. This is a standalone app that reads and writes OBJ files, not a Blender addon. And the result is quad-dominant, not perfectly all-quad. Even that demo left over a thousand non-quad faces, so you may still want a manual cleanup pass after.
AutoRemesher 1.0
So that's AutoRemesher. Messy scan in, clean quad topology out, free and on every OS. If you touch 3D, it's worth a look. The link is on screen, and there's a new repo tomorrow.
