Gemini CLI v0.66.0 says it isn't optimized for Gemini 4 Argon and points Argon users to Antigravity CLI, notes that unpaid and Google One accounts moved to Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026, and fixes git identity in the shell tool, freezing update checks for private extensions, false auto-update success, MCP OAuth on private networks, .env placeholders in settings, tmux flicker and lost scrollback. https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/releases/tag/v0.66.0 https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/compare/v0.65.0...v0.66.0 https://antigravity.google/product/antigravity-cli

Gemini CLI’s README now opens with a warning: the CLI hasn’t been optimized for Gemini 4 Argon or the newest Gemini models. If you want to code with Argon, Google sends you to Antigravity instead.
If you use Gemini CLI on the unpaid tier or through a Google One plan, this change already reached you. Antigravity CLI replaced Gemini CLI for those accounts on June 18.
The README no longer pitches sixty free requests a minute and a thousand a day with a personal Google account. The Gemini 3 claims went with it. Sign-in with a Code Assist license or an API key stays.
Git and updates.
When Gemini ran git through its shell tool, it hid your global .gitconfig file, so a commit could fail with author identity unknown. Now your name, email, signing key and default branch come through.
For an extension from a private GitHub repo, the background update check could open an SSH prompt and take over your keyboard. Gemini CLI now turns those prompts off, so the check fails quietly.
With two installs on your path, auto-update could update one, report success, and leave you running the old one. It now checks the copy that’s running and tells you when the update missed.
MCP servers.
If your company hosts MCP servers and their sign-in on an internal network, Gemini CLI rejected those private addresses during OAuth. A new per-server setting allows them. It’s off by default, and HTTPS is still required.
A token kept in a .env file never reached your settings, so the MCP server got the placeholder text and returned a 400 error. Settings now resolve after that file loads, except the few that control loading it.
Any MCP error containing the digits 401 counted as a sign-in failure, even a refused connection to port 4012. Gemini CLI now matches only real 401 responses, so you see the actual connection error.
The terminal.
Inside tmux, the screen could flicker the whole time the model was responding. Each frame now goes out as one synchronized update, and the spinner redraws only itself, a little slower under tmux.
Resizing the window or expanding output with Ctrl+O wiped your terminal’s scrollback, including everything from before Gemini started. Now only the visible screen clears. One full-screen redraw inside the Ink renderer still wipes it.
One keybindings entry can now list several keys, where that used to throw out your whole file. Skill files with a one-line description now load. And a stop signal from systemd now reaches Gemini CLI.
For Gemini 4 Argon, I’d use Antigravity CLI, because Gemini CLI isn’t optimized for it. On other models, the git and terminal fixes make this update worth taking. Every change is in the Gemini CLI release notes on GitHub.
