Anthropic’s claude-api skill now builds Managed Agents that run dynamic workflows

workflows: enabled
anthropics/skills · pull request #1995

Anthropic's Claude API skill can now build Managed Agents that run dynamic workflows. It merged on October 9th. Ask it for an agent whose job is too big to hand out one task at a time, and it switches workflows on.

The agent writes a plan, and many agents work through it in phases

claude-api · Managed Agentsdynamic workflows
phase 1one agent per contract reads it
phase 2a second agent checks each one
phase 3the findings are combined

Separate from Claude Code’s own Workflow tool

claude-api/shared/managed-agents-multiagent.md · Dynamic workflows

With workflows on, the agent writes a plan that runs many agents in phases. The server runs it in the background, so the agent can keep working. It's separate from Claude Code's own Workflow tool.

The skill picks a workflow run when a job outgrows 25 child threads

claude-api · SKILL.mdwhen to use it
roster of subagents
25
child threads per session
workflow run
64
agents at once today, about 1,000 over a run
claude-api/SKILL.md · managed-agents-multiagent.md, Limits

The skill decides by the size of the job. A roster of subagents tops out at 25 child threads. A job bigger than that gets a workflow run, which today keeps up to 64 agents working at once.

It sets the new multiagent type and writes a line saying when to start a run

claude-api · multiagent guidePython example
multiagent={"type": "multiagent_20261001", "workflows": {"type": "enabled"}}
system=
"When you’re asked to review more than a few contracts, start a workflow run that reads them in parallel and combines the findings. Review one or two contracts yourself, without a run."
claude-api/shared/managed-agents-multiagent.md · Contract Reviewer example

The skill sets the new multiagent type with workflows enabled. The agent decides when to start a run, so the skill also writes a system prompt line saying when. That line stays conditional, because every agent in a run uses tokens.

It tells you workflows are on, what they cost, and how to turn them off

claude-api · SKILL.mdclosing reply
Workflows are onmany agents, in phases, in the background
Every agent uses tokensso the session needs a budget
How to turn them offworkflows: {"type": "disabled"}
claude-api/SKILL.md · managed-agents-multiagent.md, What to tell the user

When the skill turns workflows on, its reply says so. It says every agent uses tokens, so the session needs a budget, and shows how to switch workflows off. If you've said no, it builds a plain roster instead.

Four new quickstart templates run as dynamic workflows

claude-api · managed-agents-quickstarts13 templates
Bug hunterreports only bugs a separate agent proved
Performance tuneran optimizer for every slow function
Explainer video makeran agent per scene, captions and music
Watchlist scannerwhat changed since the last close, per ticker
claude-api/shared/managed-agents-quickstarts/ · PR #1995

The skill gains four quickstart templates built on workflows, for 13 in all. A bug hunter reports only bugs a separate agent proved, and a performance tuner optimizes every slow function. There's also a video maker and a stock watchlist scanner.

After a large Messages API job, the skill offers Managed Agents once

claude-api · tool-use.md, every languagenew rule
Four sentences at mostfive when the version would use workflows
No dollar figuresand no cost comparison
Skippedfor small jobs, or when you named the Messages API
claude-api/{python,typescript,go,java,csharp,php,ruby}/claude-api/tool-use.md

After building a large Messages API job, the skill now offers a Managed Agents version, in a few sentences with no dollar figures. It offers once per conversation, and skips small jobs or anyone who asked for the Messages API by name.

Limited networking now restricts web search and web fetch too

claude-api · managed-agents-environments.mdcorrected
networking does not govern web_search / web_fetch
limited: allowed_hosts applies · no hosts, no results

Unrestricted opens the whole sandbox, so the skill offers it with that warning and leaves the choice to you.

claude-api/shared/managed-agents-environments.md · managed-agents-tools.md

The skill's networking advice is corrected. Under limited networking, web search and web fetch reach only the allowed hosts, and with none listed they return nothing. Unrestricted networking opens the whole sandbox, so the skill offers it with that warning and lets you choose.

Managed Agents is in beta, and every workflow run has limits

claude-api · multiagent guide, LimitsManaged Agents beta

github.com/anthropics/skills/pull/1995
claude-api/shared/managed-agents-multiagent.md · Limits

Managed Agents is still in beta. A workflow run lasts 24 hours by default, a session holds 10 open runs, and a run past about 1,000 threads ends with an error. The change is pull request 1995 in Anthropic's skills repository.
