OpenCode no longer updates itself, and /update moves you to OpenCode 2

OpenCode, the open source coding agent, stopped installing updates on its own. You run /update when you want one, and once you're current, it offers OpenCode 2.

Updates on your terms

First, how updates work now.

Updates wait until you ask

opencode
01020304Updates on your terms
anomalyco/opencode · release notes, Oct 11, 2026 · PR #54409

OpenCode checks every 10 minutes and shows a notice under its logo.

Update checks you switched off stay off.

OpenCode used to install small updates silently at startup. Now it checks every ten minutes and puts a notice on the home screen. If you switched update checks off, they stay off.

/update installs it, then asks for a restart

Update available
An update is available. After installing, you’ll be prompted to restart OpenCode.
SkipUpdate
Update successful! A restart is required.

Type /update and a dialog offers Skip or Update. The install runs in that dialog, then a Restart button finishes it. A skipped version stays quiet until a newer one ships.

Up to date? /update offers OpenCode 2

“It contains some breaking changes.”

Dismiss hides the offer for a week.

Once OpenCode 1 is current, /update offers OpenCode 2, the next major release, with a warning that it has breaking changes. Dismiss it, and the offer returns in a week.

One command swaps OpenCode 1 for OpenCode 2

opencode upgrade --major

If the OpenCode 2 install fails, OpenCode 1 goes back on.

In the shell, the upgrade command takes a new major flag. It removes OpenCode 1 and installs OpenCode 2 with the same package manager. If that fails, OpenCode 1 goes back.

anomalyco/opencode · release notes, Oct 11, 2026 · PR #53875

OpenAI’s ultrafast service tier now goes through

Before, choosing it failed validation inside OpenCode.

If you pay OpenAI for its ultrafast service tier, OpenCode now accepts it. Before, picking that tier failed validation inside OpenCode.

Grok now sees the images your tools return

Test card: PELICAN 739, a yellow star and a green triangle
Before
Grok describes a red square that is not in the image
After
Grok describes the real image: PELICAN 739, a yellow star and a green triangle

On xAI, when a tool returned an image, Grok got only the words, Image read successfully. Asked about this test card, it invented a red square. Now the image itself arrives, and Grok describes the pelican card correctly.

Claude on GitHub Copilot finishes turns with several tool calls

With thinking on, the second tool call used to abort the turn.

If you run Claude with thinking on through GitHub Copilot, a turn with several tool calls used to stop with an error at the second call. Now it runs to the end.

macOS binaries are signed properly

anomalyco/opencode · release notes, Sep 30, 2026 · PR #52183 · commit f66b86c

OpenCode on macOS is signed properly now

Release downloadssigned with an Apple Developer ID, on npm and Homebrew
Builds you compilere-signed, so macOS 27 stops killing them

OpenCode's macOS release binaries are now signed with an Apple Developer ID, so allowlists that trust a publisher accept them. And a build you compile yourself is re-signed, so macOS 27 stops killing it.

Terminal connections are checked first

opencode
01020304Fixes
anomalyco/opencode · release notes, Oct 11, 2026 · commit 7b39a33

Terminal connections prove who they are first

Origin and ticket are checked before OpenCode looks up the terminal.

When a client attaches to a terminal session on OpenCode's server, its origin and ticket are now checked first, before OpenCode looks up whether that terminal exists.

Three smaller fixes

Windows /statusshows plugin names again, not a folder path
Session headersevery model request names its session and parent
C++ modules.cppm and .ixx files get syntax highlighting

On Windows, the status dialog shows plugin names instead of folder paths. Model requests carry their session ID and the parent session's, so a proxy can group them. And C++ module files get highlighting.

Chocolatey and Scoop installs move by hand

anomalyco/opencode · commit c28b6a0 · opencode.ai/v2/docs

OpenCode 2 has no Windows package manager installs. It offers a standalone Windows download.

If you installed OpenCode with Chocolatey or Scoop, the major upgrade can't move you. OpenCode 2 skips Windows package managers and offers a standalone download instead.

OpenCode 1 plugins don’t run in OpenCode 2

Terminal settingstui.json moves to cli.json, automatically

The guide: Migrate from V1, in the OpenCode 2 docs

OpenCode 2 has three breaking changes. Plugins use a new API and need porting. Tools that call OpenCode's server need updating. Terminal settings move to one file by themselves. Your config, agents and skills keep working, and the Migrate from V1 guide covers the rest.
