Claude Code can now block writes outside your project, and Opus 4.8 fast mode ends

Claude Code v2.1.312 to v2.1.316, for developers who use Claude Code: a new setting blocks Claude's file writes outside your working directories, and fast mode on Opus 4.8 ends November 30, 2026. Also: no more overwriting a huge CLAUDE.md, effort caps that retry instead of failing, claude -p that exits 1 on failure, idle compaction in VS Code and Claude Desktop, Bedrock, Vertex and Foundry fallbacks, and Anthropic's plugins moving to claude-plugins-official. https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/releases/tag/v2.1.312 https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/releases/tag/v2.1.314 https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/releases/tag/v2.1.316 https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/pull/105303

Claude Code has a new permission setting that keeps Claude's file edits inside your working directories. Turn it on, and Write, Edit and Notebook Edit refuse any other path, in every permission mode.
If you use fast mode on Opus 4.8, you have one month. On November 30 it starts returning an error instead of falling back to standard Opus 4.8. Opus 5.5 keeps the speedup.
A very large CLAUDE.md or rules file in a subdirectory could be overwritten after Claude saw only its start. Now the Write tool asks Claude to read the whole file first, or edit it in place.
When an admin caps a model's effort, Claude Code now drops to the allowed level and retries instead of failing every turn. Subagents can get their own effort level, and the ultrathink keyword can be switched off.
Three fixes for scripts. claude -p prints its startup error and exits with code one. Bash scripts with SHELLOPTS exported run past their first command. And shell commands stop when Claude Code exits.
In VS Code and Claude Desktop's Code tab, a long conversation you leave idle now gets summarized. When you come back after the prompt cache expires, your next message starts from that summary.
On Bedrock, Vertex and Foundry, a missing newest model now means an older model of the same family, not an error. And Bedrock sessions full of images compact instead of failing.
The Claude Code plugins marketplace now installs every plugin from Claude plugins official. Installed names keep working, Ralph Wiggum becomes Ralph Loop, and hookify now enforces block rules that used to fail silently.
The Claude Code changelog has the rest, including dozens of terminal, VS Code and Slack fixes. If you only change one thing, I'd turn on the new write block today.
