claude --desktop
Claude Code v2.1.285 opens the desktop app from your terminal
- claude --desktop
- the Claude desktop app, on this directory
- --continue / --resume <id>
- the same, on that session
Claude Code 2.1.285 adds a desktop flag. Run claude --desktop and the Claude desktop app opens on your current directory. Add continue, or resume with an ID, and it opens that session instead.
01 Plugins and sessions

and sessions
Plugins and sessions.
Plugin settings from the command line
>Plugin settings now work from the command line
claude plugin configure <plugin>
claude plugin install --config <server>.<key>=<value>
A new plugin configure command shows a plugin's options, flags the unset ones, and saves new values. Plugin install can now set a bundled MCP server's own settings, so it starts ready to use.
Resume a background session
>/resume now opens a session running in the background
claude --resume <id> "prompt"
The prompt becomes that session's next turn.
Resume now opens a session that is running in the background, instead of refusing it, and a prompt passed with its ID becomes that session's next turn.

allowedProviders
>Admins can limit which API providers a machine uses
- Setting
- allowedProviders, in managed settings
- Choices
- Anthropic API, a custom endpoint, Bedrock, Mantle, Vertex AI, Foundry, Claude Platform on AWS, a Cloud gateway
A new managed setting, allowed providers, limits which API providers a machine may use, from the Anthropic API and custom endpoints to Bedrock, Vertex AI and Foundry.
Turn off WebFetch
>WebFetch can be switched off with one variable
CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_WEB_FETCH
Team and Enterprise: WebFetch now waits for the organization policy when it fails to load at startup.
A new environment variable turns off the WebFetch tool. On Team and Enterprise plans, when the organization policy fails to load at startup, WebFetch waits until it does.
Deny rules hold over installed plugins
>A deny rule in your settings now holds over plugins you install
On machines with managed settings, and for Team and Enterprise organizations.
- allowManagedModsOnly
- a new admin option: only the organization's and built-in mods load
A plugin that approves every tool call could lift a deny rule. On managed machines and Team or Enterprise organizations, the rule now holds. A new admin option keeps personal mods from loading.
03 Changed defaults
>Changed
defaults
Changed defaults.
Background commands time out
>Background shell commands now stop after a time limit
- Default
- 30 minutes
- Maximum
- 2 hours, set by the command's timeout
- When it stops
- Claude is notified
Background Bash and PowerShell commands now stop when they hit a time limit, 30 minutes by default and at most two hours, and Claude is told when one is stopped.
1M context behind a custom base URL
>A custom base URL now gets the 1M context window
- Models
- Opus 4.7 and later, Sonnet 5 and later, Fable
# gateway stops at 200K?
/autocompact 200k
Sessions behind a custom Anthropic base URL now use the 1 million token context window on models that have one. If your gateway stops at 200 thousand tokens, set auto compact back to that.
claude -p starts in auto mode
>claude -p on third-party providers now starts in auto mode
- Applies to
- claude -p and Python Agent SDK sessions
- When
- a third-party provider or telemetry off, and no permission mode set
- Override
- --permission-mode
Print mode and Python Agent SDK sessions on third-party providers, or with telemetry off, now start in auto mode when no permission mode is set. The permission mode flag still wins.
widgets is a reserved MCP name
>Cloud sessions reserve the MCP server name widgets
A server of yours named widgets, or a close spelling like widgets_, no longer loads there.
In cloud sessions and on self-hosted runners, the MCP server name widgets is now reserved. A server of yours with that name, or a close spelling, no longer loads, so rename it.

Retries
>Failing requests stop retrying sooner
- Streaming failures
- up to 21 retries before; the fallback now shares one budget
- Content filter
- its error shows at once, instead of minutes of retries
- Sign-in
- finishes after the browser shows success
A failing request could be retried up to 21 times, and now the fallback shares one retry budget. Content filter blocks show their error right away, and sign-in stops hanging.
Hooks and cancelled commands
>Hooks and cancelled commands no longer stall the session
- Synchronous hooks
- finish once their own process exits
- Cancelled commands
- a cancel during setup now stops the command
- Long sessions
- a freeze of up to a second, outside fullscreen, is gone
A synchronous hook no longer hangs when a background process it started keeps its output open. A cancelled command stays cancelled, and long sessions lose a one-second freeze.
Permission checks
>Permission checks that could be skipped now run
- PowerShell
- deny and ask rules apply even when its parser fails to start
- Fork subagents
- run under the parent's permission mode, and stay in plan mode
- Artifact allow rule
- stops covering files outside your working directories
PowerShell deny and ask rules now apply even when its command parser fails. Fork subagents keep their parent's permission mode, and an Artifact allow rule stops covering files outside your working directories.
05 The VS Code extension
>The VS Code
extension
The VS Code extension.
VS Code
>VS Code gets a plugin options form and a diagnostics tool
- Plugin options
- a form asks for unset ones on install; a gear changes them later
- Diagnostics
- Claude can check the Problems panel at any time
- Reloads
- a restored tab says when a reload cut off its reply
In VS Code, installing a plugin with options opens a form for the unset ones, and Claude can check the Problems panel's errors and warnings at any time.
