Openglad 2.1092 fixes the bugs in the classic specials: a disarm that sped up the foe it hit, a Turn Undead that couldn't reach the skeleton beside you, and bots casting at nobody. It's one setting, Gameplay Fixes, and it's on by default.
It sits under Game Settings, Gameplay FX, below New Specials. Green is on. Red is off, and off is the classic game exactly, bugs included. The text and curses clients have it too, and in a networked game the host decides. The original game Openglad tests against carries the same fixes.
On the left, the classic Disarm. The fighter wins the roll against a level 12 soldier, pays the full 150 magic, and the stagger comes out negative, so the foe swings sooner. On the right, the stronger foe resists. A resisted disarm costs half, 75 magic, and with nobody in reach it costs nothing.
Turn Undead used to reach four pixels per cleric level. At level 7 that's 28 pixels, so these skeletons, 50 pixels away, stay out of reach and keep hitting him. Now the reach is at least 60 pixels, and both fall where they stand. With no undead in range, the cast is refused for free.
Whirlwind, Taunt, Scare and Howl used to go off with nobody in reach, spending the magic anyway. Now each is refused for free, and Summon Elemental with no room stops taking half your spare magic. Heal stops at full health, so allies no longer sit above their maximum.
Bots change too. A classic bot mage cast any special whenever no foe was within 110 pixels, so on the left it freezes time at nobody. Now each special a bot can roll has its own payoff rule, and Freeze Time waits until the allies are fighting. A level 13 mage can finally roll Heartburst, too.
On the left, an enemy thief charms the hero the player is driving, and the hero changes sides. On the right, a driven hero resists. A failed Mind Control no longer joins the caster, Charm Opponent takes the nearest foe, and your seat skips walkers that are only yours because they're charmed.
Plan for three things. The network protocol moves to version 21, and builds drop messages from other versions, so everyone in a networked game needs 2.1092. Replays move to format 23, so a replay recorded on 2.1091 won't play here. And four Long Season levels are slightly easier, rebalanced for the fixed Heal and the new bot rules.
Open 2.1092 in your browser, or grab the Linux, Windows or Mac build from the release page. The main menu stamps the version, so you can check which build you're running. If you'd rather keep the classic specials, bugs and all, switch Gameplay Fixes off. Otherwise, Openglad 2.1092 fixes them for you, on by default.
